How to play Shootr

Shootr is a penalty shootout for two. One of you takes five penalties, the other goes in goal and calls five dives. The goal is split into nine zones, and neither side sees the other until both are in. Five penalties, four goals to win, one winner.

A challenge in four steps

  1. 1

    Pick your side

Start a challenge and choose whether you shoot or go in goal. No account needed. Whoever you send it to gets the other side.

  2. 2

    Take your five

The goal is split into nine zones. Pick a zone for each of your five penalties, and choose placed or blast if you are shooting.

  3. 3

    Send the code

Every challenge gets a short code and a link. Send it to a mate by message or email, or pick someone you have played before.

  4. 4

    Watch it play out

When their five picks land, the shootout runs end to end in 2D. Confetti for the winner, and both of you can watch it back any time.

The nine zones

Every penalty comes down to one choice on each side. The shooter picks a zone to hit, the keeper picks a zone to dive at. Guess the same zone and it is a save, every time.

Placed or blast

Every penalty is struck one of two ways, and the choice is the whole gamble.

Placed

Side foot, aimed. It always finds the zone you picked, but a keeper diving to the zone next door still gets a glove on it more often than not.

Blast

Laces through it. Almost nothing gets stopped by a hand in the next zone along, but pick a corner and there is a real chance you put it wide or off the frame.

How it is won

Five penalties, no draws. The shooter takes it with four goals or more. Anything less and the keeper wins, so two saves in goal is enough to walk away with it.

Shooter wins on 4

Score four or five of your penalties and the night is yours.

Keeper wins on 2

Stop two and the shooter cannot reach four. A shot dragged wide counts for you too.

Questions people ask

What is Shootr?
Shootr is a two player penalty shootout you play in the browser. You take five penalties, send a mate the link, and they go in goal and call five dives. The whole shootout then plays out in 2D and one of you walks away with it.
Do I need an account to play?
No. Tap a challenge link, type a name, and you are in goal. An account is only offered afterwards, if you want your record and your friends list to follow you to another device.
Do both players have to be online at the same time?
No. You take your five whenever you like, and your mate answers whenever they open the link. The shootout runs itself the moment the second set of picks lands, and you both get the result.
How do I send a challenge to a friend?
Every challenge gets its own seven character code, such as A3BDX7Y, and a link that ends in /ch/A3BDX7Y. Send that link by message or email, or pick a friend you have already played. Whoever opens it first takes the other side.
Can the keeper win?
Yes, and it is an even fight. Five penalties decide it and the shooter needs four goals to take the win, so two saves in goal is enough to win it outright.
Can other people watch my shootout?
Anyone with the link can watch the replay once both sides have picked, no account needed. Before that nothing is shown, not the shots and not the dives.
Does it cost anything?
No. Shootr is free, and you do not even need an account to play: pick your side, take your five, and send it on.
